REAL ID Requirements

Beginning May 7, 2025, all individuals over the age of 18 who are authorized to drive onto Arlington National Cemetery should be prepared to present a REAL ID at the security checkpoint.

Invitation to Public Comment: Pentagon Memorial Fund Visitor Education Center

With this notice, ANMC informs consulting parties and the public that, in accordance with Section 106 of the NHPA, the agency has applied the criteria of adverse effects (36 CFR § 800.5[a][1]) to the undertaking and finds that the proposed project would have no adverse effects to the three historic properties located in the undertaking’s Area of Potential Effects (APE).  The public can view the Assessment of Effects (AOE) documentation submitted to the DHR on both the ANC and PMF websites: https://www.arlingtoncemetery.mil/About/Policies-and-Public-Notices/Public-Notices (ANC) and https://www.pentagonmemorial.org/public-notices/ (PMF).  The documentation includes all consultation records to date, and an assessment of potential effects to the three historic properties in the APE. In addition, the public can view correspondence between the DHR and ANMC, consulting party meeting records, and reviews and approvals from the the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts (CFA) and the National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC).


Webinar: Commemorating the Pioneering Nurses of the Spanish-American War at Arlington National Cemetery

On Apr. 15, 2024 at 7 p.m. EST, ANC Senior Historian Dr. Allison Finkelstein will present a commemoration of the pioneering nurses of the Spanish-American War who are interred at Arlington National Cemetery. These contract nurses who served in America’s first international war in two hemispheres were the foremothers of today's Army Nurse Corps. Dr. Finkelstein will bring their stories to life as she provides a virtual tour of Section 21, the Nurses’ Section, containing the gravesites of nurses who served in this conflict.

Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall to Host Annual Easter Sunrise Service

The annual National Military Easter Sunrise Service will be held Sunday, March 31 at Arlington National Cemetery’s Memorial Amphitheater and hosted by Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall Commander Col. Tasha N. Lowery. The service, which will take place from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m., will also be live streamed on the joint base Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/jbmhh.  


Freedman's Village Online Discussion, Feb. 28

On Wednesday, Feb. 28, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. EST, a panel of historians and archivists will discuss Freedman’s Village, a community of formerly enslaved African Americans established in 1863 on the Arlington, VA, estate previously owned by the family of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. The Freedman’s Village on the Arlington property evolved into a unique and thriving community with schools, hospitals, churches, and social services. While intended to be temporary, the community remained on the land from 1863 until 1900, and it had a lasting legacy. Participating on the panel will be Amber Forrester and Damani Davis from the National Archives, Allison Finkelstein from Arlington National Cemetery, and Steve Hammond, a seventh-generation member of the Syphax family of Washington, DC.


Arlington National Cemetery to Hold Annual Wreaths Out Event on Saturday, Jan. 20

Virtual Teacher Workshop, Jan. 17: Making Connections—Portraiture and Memorial

Join Arlington National Cemetery and the National Portrait Gallery in examining connections between the exhibition “1898: U.S. Imperial Visions and Revisions,” which examines the U.S. intervention in Cuba and U.S. expansion into Guam, Hawai'i, Puerto Rico and the Philippines, and selected memorials, graves and sites within the cemetery related to this controversial chapter in history. Consider the roles of memorials, monuments, cemeteries and portraits in sharing stories, and how they may impact perceptions of these historic events.    


Metro Service Changes Impacting ANC, Jan. 12 through 15

January 08, 2024

During the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend, Metro will close a portion of the Blue, Orange and Silver lines for track work and maintenance. There will be NO rail service to the Arlington Cemetery stop on the Blue Line between Jan. 12 and Jan. 15. The Rosslyn station will also be closed. Buses will replace trains between Foggy Bottom-GWU and Arlington Cemetery.


Confederate Memorial Removal Update and Advisory

December 20, 2023

The remaining bronze elements of the Confederate Memorial have been removed from Arlington National Cemetery and are stored in a secure DoD facility in Virginia. The granite base will remain off limits to visitors until it is determined safe.
