A construction project at Memorial Amphitheater may affect visitors from Sept. 19 through Oct. 25, 2024. This work entails removing an outdated and unusable elevator.
The contractor will load most materials before or after cemetery hours in order to minimize impact to pedestrians; weekend work is not planned. To further minimize disturbances, the contractor will be made aware of funerals and ceremonies in the area, including the Changing of the Guard. However, visitors who observe the Changing of the Guard may hear occasional construction noises.
The construction will also have some impact on pedestrian movement in and around Memorial Amphitheater. The southeast corner of the Amphitheater's arcade level — the circular colonnade around the seating bowl — will be blocked off as needed around the elevator. Visitors may need to use the north side of the arcade, as directed by signage. Access to ramps for visitors with disabilities, as well as access to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, will not be impacted.
We ask for your patience as we work to improve Arlington National Cemetery. This essential project will ensure the safety of our visitors to this 104-year-old structure — an iconic architectural feature of the cemetery and the hallowed site of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
