Commemoration events under way to honor Arlington National Cemetery’s 150th anniversary

Arlington National Cemetery opened the five-week commemoration for its 150th anniversary with a wreath-laying ceremony at the gravesite of Army Pvt. William Christman, who was the first military burial at Arlington. At the age of 20, Christman enlisted in the 67th Pennsylvania Infantry on March 25, 1864, and was hospitalized for measles five weeks later. He died on May 11 and was buried at Arlington on May 13. Members of the Christman family were present at the ceremony and placed a wreath at his grave. Rick Bodenschatz, representing the Tobyhanna Township Historical Association, placed a stone of remembrance from the original Christman home. The family home, located in Pocono Lake, Tobyhanna Township, was built from funds received from Christman’s Army service. ANC 150, the commemoration of 150 years of Arlington as a national cemetery, begins Tuesday, May 13 with an Army wreath-laying ceremony at the gravesite of Army Pvt. Advisory Committee on Arlington National Cemetery subcommittee meetings, April 30

The Department of the Army announced the following federal advisory subcommittee meetings of the Advisory Committee on Arlington National Cemetery (ACANC). The meetings will be held Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at the Women in Military Service for America Memorial. The meetings are open to the public. The Women in Military Service for America Memorial is fully handicapped accessible. Arlington National Cemetery will host a series of events from May through June 2014 to honor the traditions, remember the sacrifice and explore the history of the cemetery as it commemorates 150 years as a national cemetery. The commemoration begins with a wreath laying ceremony May 13 at the gravesite of Army Pvt. William Christman, the first military burial at Arlington, and concludes with a wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on June 16, the day after Arlington officially became a national cemetery. The cemetery will also host lectures and tours that highlight the history of the United States through the eyes of the heroes buried at Arlington and the military conflicts that shaped the cemetery and the nation. Road closures at entrance to Arlington, Sunday, April 27

Memorial Bridge and Memorial Circle on the George Washington Memorial Parkway will be closed Sunday, April 27, 2014 from 5 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. for the Nike Women’s Half Marathon. Visitors driving to Arlington should use Route 110.

Arlington National Cemetery, the nation’s premier military cemetery, has been designated as an arboretum. In addition to being the final resting place for thousands of the nation’s veterans, Arlington is also known for its rolling hills, perfectly aligned marble headstones and immaculate landscaping. The grounds honor those who have served the nation by providing a sense of beauty and peace. The purpose of the arboretum at Arlington is to preserve and interpret the collection of trees and ornamental plants that serve as a backdrop to this national shrine. In 2013, Arlington National Cemetery joined the Morton Register of Arboreta. The purpose of the Morton Register is to identify all of the organizations that collect and display trees, shrubs, and other woody plants for the benefit of the public, science and conservation.
