For First Time in Nearly 100 Years, Public Authorized to Approach Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Plaza

ARLINGTON, Va. — For the first time in nearly 100 years, and as part of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Centennial Commemoration, the public will be able to walk on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Plaza and lay flowers in front of the Tomb on Nov. 9 and 10, 2021.

Throughout 2021, Arlington National Cemetery is holding a series of commemorative events, exhibits and ceremonies that will culminate on November 11 in conjunction with the National Veterans Day Observance. The public will have many opportunities to participate.

On October 22, 2021, join Arlington National Cemetery, the American Battle Monuments Commission, and the National WWI Museum and Memorial for a special partnered program to commemorate the centennial of the selection of the World War I Unknown Solider. This lunch-and-learn webinar will explore the fascinating story of how the U.S. Army selected the World War I Unknown Soldier and went to great lengths to ensure his eternal anonymity. It will touch upon the context of American military burial practices and memorialization in the World War I era and highlight ABMC’s deep connections to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
