National Memorial Day Observance: Monday, May 27

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The 156th National Memorial Day Observance, recognizing and commemorating the fallen men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces, is scheduled for Monday, May 27, 2024, at 11 a.m., in the Memorial Amphitheater at Arlington National Cemetery, in Arlington, Virginia.   The annual event is free and open to the public. Seating in the amphitheater is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Scheduled events for the observance include: the United States Air Force Band’s Singing Sergeants and the U.S. Coast Guard Band performing a prelude in the amphitheater at 10:15 a.m.; a wreath-laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier conducted by a joint service team; and the national observance inside the Memorial Amphitheater with a parade of colors by Veterans’ organizations and remarks from dignitaries. Attendance for the annual wreath-laying ceremony will be limited this year to official participants.   Additional details are as follows:

160th Anniversary History and Horticulture Tram Tour

On Saturday, June 15, the Arlington National Cemetery (ANC) History Office and Horticulture are hosting a special public tram tour in honor of the 160th anniversary of ANC becoming a national cemetery. The tram tour will depart at 9:30 a.m. and will last approximately two hours.

Arlington National Cemetery Announces Third Flowers of Remembrance Day

Arlington National Cemetery (ANC) is honored to announce the third Flowers of Remembrance Day, to be held at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on Sunday, May 26, 2024, from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

“As we arrive at the third annual Flowers of Remembrance, I am reminded of what a meaningful day this is for Arlington National Cemetery and the American public. This special opportunity for visitors to walk across the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier plaza and place a flower demonstrates the respect for service and sacrifice held by our grateful nation. These floral tributes are timeless symbols to honor the fallen on our most hallowed grounds,” said Army National Military Cemeteries and Office of Army Cemeteries Executive Director Karen Durham-Aguilera.

Invitation to Public Comment: Pentagon Memorial Fund Visitor Education Center

With this notice, ANMC informs consulting parties and the public that, in accordance with Section 106 of the NHPA, the agency has applied the criteria of adverse effects (36 CFR § 800.5[a][1]) to the undertaking and finds that the proposed project would have no adverse effects to the three historic properties located in the undertaking’s Area of Potential Effects (APE).  The public can view the Assessment of Effects (AOE) documentation submitted to the DHR on both the ANC and PMF websites: (ANC) and (PMF).  The documentation includes all consultation records to date, and an assessment of potential effects to the three historic properties in the APE. In addition, the public can view correspondence between the DHR and ANMC, consulting party meeting records, and reviews and approvals from the the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts (CFA) and the National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC).

Webinar: Commemorating the Pioneering Nurses of the Spanish-American War at Arlington National Cemetery

On Apr. 15, 2024 at 7 p.m. EST, ANC Senior Historian Dr. Allison Finkelstein will present a commemoration of the pioneering nurses of the Spanish-American War who are interred at Arlington National Cemetery. These contract nurses who served in America’s first international war in two hemispheres were the foremothers of today's Army Nurse Corps. Dr. Finkelstein will bring their stories to life as she provides a virtual tour of Section 21, the Nurses’ Section, containing the gravesites of nurses who served in this conflict.
