REAL ID Requirements

Beginning May 7, 2025, all individuals over the age of 18 who are authorized to drive onto Arlington National Cemetery should be prepared to present a REAL ID at the security checkpoint.

Emergency Closure: Friday, Sept. 8

Arlington National Cemetery officials and Joint Base Myer Henderson-Hall emergency services are currently responding to a bomb threat. The cemetery is closed to the general public and funeral services have been delayed until further notice. The cemetery's response teams and local law enforcement partners are on site investigating the threat. The public is requested to avoid the area and wait for updates posted to our social media platforms. 


Memorial Avenue Construction

From Sept. 7 through Oct. 10, 2023, Arlington National Cemetery is undertaking a construction project on Memorial Avenue, its main roadway entrance for visitors and families. The project, which will include milling, paving and traffic enhancement, will improve traffic flow for both pedestrians and motorists.


Pentagon Memorial Fund Visitor Education Center: Notice of Public Meeting

Arlington, VA—The Pentagon Memorial Fund (PMF), with Army National Military Cemeteries (ANMC) as the lead federal agency, is proposing to construct and operate a Visitor Education Center (VEC) for the existing 9/11 Pentagon Memorial on the grounds of Arlington National Cemetery (ANC).

Pedestrian Road Closures in Southern Expansion Area

We would like to inform you of some pedestrian route changes and detours that will take place surrounding the construction supporting Arlington National Cemetery’s Southern Expansion project. On or around August 11, 2023 the pedestrian route will be reconfigured as shown in green and blue on the map below:


Turf Renovations

August 07, 2023

Arlington National Cemetery annually renovates more than 30 acres of turf. This process involves removing the old turf and weeds, tilling the soil, grading the grave sites and planting new grass from seed. Each year, the Horticulture Division assigns sections for renovation as needed. The long-term result will be a much healthier, thicker turf and ground that is much more level.


Notice of Public Meeting for Preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement and Section 106 Public Consultation Regarding Removal of the Confederate Memorial from Arlington National Cemetery Department of the Army

The Department of the Army has published a Notice of Intent (NOI) to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and to conduct the Section 106 public consultation process under the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) to address potential environmental effects associated with the congressionally-mandated removal of the Confederate Memorial from Arlington National Cemetery (ANC).


Road and Gate Closures

The Ord and Weitzel vehicular and pedestrian gates will be closed for portions of the summer in order to be replaced.

Fourth of July Air Force Memorial and Road Closures

In collaboration with the Air Force District of Washington (AFDW), public access to the Air Force Memorial will be closed on July 4. While we recognize that it has become an annual tradition for many visitors and local community members to view the fireworks and commemorate this patriotic day from the Air Force Memorial, this is an active construction site involving multiple road closures, which poses a significant safety and security risk. Our priority is to keep our visitors safe and allow them the time needed to make alternative plans this holiday.
