Arlington National Cemetery to share design for Millennium expansion project

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Millennium Project at Arlington National Cemetery started in the late 1990s when Congress realized that Arlington National Cemetery was near capacity. Expansion areas were limited, but through law, Congress directed a land transfer from Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall and the National Park Service; paired with existing Arlington property, the Millennium Project was born.

ARLINGTON, Va. – A construction project to improve access to Senator Edward M. Kennedy gravesite is under way at Arlington National Cemetery. The project will connect Senator Kennedy’s gravesite to the gravesites of Robert F. Kennedy and John F. Kennedy with a granite path. Visitors currently have to exit the stepped path from the RFK gravesite to visit Senator Kennedy’s gravesite. The new path will be constructed in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act accessible design standards.

Visiting Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day

The National Memorial Day Observance at Arlington National Cemetery will be held on Monday, May 28, 2012 in the Memorial Amphitheater. This year’s observance includes a number of events to honor the fallen, including for the second year, the “Memorial Flowers” gift donation. All events are free and open to the public.

National Medal of Honor Day tour available for download

March 25, 2012
In recognition of National Medal of Honor Day, Arlington National Cemetery conducted a special guided walking tour of Arlington National Cemetery focusing on Medal of Honor recipients buried at Arlington, as well as the history of the Medal of Honor. Tom Sherlock, Arlington National Cemetery historian, and Timothy Frank, a historian with the Naval History and Heritage Command, narrated the tour. Frank was a contract historian for the Medal of Honor Society from 2002 to 2004, and had the opportunity to interview 60 Medal of Honor recipients. A downloadable copy of the tour is available, as well as a list of Medal of Honor Recipients buried or memorialized at Arlington National Cemetery (see posting of Medal of Honor events for download).
