The history of Arlington National Cemetery is the history of America - the final resting place for the heroes and patriots who built, preserved and protected our great Nation.

Since 1864, the United States Army has been steward of this active military shrine. Unique among our national cemeteries and landmarks, Arlington National Cemetery is, above all else, a functioning cemetery, where Honor Guards from all branches of the military bring their fallen to final repose.

We invite the millions of people who visit Arlington National Cemetery every year to honor their service and remember their sacrifice by exploring the proud history of this Nation's most hallowed ground.
